We’re recruiting on-call firefighters at South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station.
On-call firefighters are paid to protect their local area by responding to incidents such as fires and road traffic collisions as well as community safety work.
You’ll need to live or work within five minutes of an on-call fire station so that you can respond quickly when paged. You’ll also need to be over 18 years of age and physically fit. Find out more about on-call firefighters.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, we’re unable to welcome visitors at the fire station but can offer virtual meetings with our On-Call Liaison Officers to answer any questions you have about being an on-call firefighter.

Kim will be available between Monday 6 July – Friday 10 July between 9am and 5pm. He can answer questions about the on-call firefighter role, recruitment process and fitness requirements.

We’ll be holding a recruitment week from Monday 6 July – Sunday 12 July where you can book a virtual meeting with Kim Polley, On-Call Liaison Officer at South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station, to ask any questions you have about being an on-call firefighter.
Information about South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station:
South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station is a day-crewed fire station which means there are firefighters in the fire station during the day Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm. Outside of those times, on-call firefighters respond when alerted by pager.
We’re converting to an on-call station and are currently recruiting on-call firefighters at South Woodham Ferrers Station who can cover during the day, evenings, weekends or a mixture of all three.
If you live or work within 5 minutes of South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station, you could be an on-call firefighter who is paid to protect their community.
On-call firefighters at South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station responded to 99 incidents in 2019/2020.
Of those 99 incidents, 39 calls were to fires, 35 were false alarms and 25 were Special Service incidents which could be helping to cut someone out of a vehicle following a collision, rescuing an animal or helping our police and ambulance colleagues.

Meet South Woodham Ferrers firefighters
At 18-years-old, Harry Clack from South Woodham Ferrers is one of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service’s (ECFRS) youngest on-call firefighters.
Harry, who is a Road Traffic Collision Reduction Officer with ECFRS, decided to train to become an on-call firefighter, initially in Maldon, but he soon moved to South Woodham Ferrers and now provides cover there.

Full time fencer Lee Murray is an on-call firefighter at South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station. A role he is paid to do on top of his day job.
Coming from a family of firefighters, 34-year-old Lee knew from a young age that this was something he would love to do.
