We’re recruiting on-call firefighters at Waltham Abbey Fire Station.


On-call firefighters are paid to protect their local area by responding to incidents such as fires and road traffic collisions as well as community safety work.

You’ll need to live or work within five minutes of an on-call fire station so that you can respond quickly when paged. You’ll also need to be over 18 years of age and physically fit. Find out more about on-call firefighters.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we’re unable to welcome visitors at the fire station but can offer virtual meetings with our On-Call Liaison Officers to answer any questions you have about being an on-call firefighter. 

To arrange a meeting with Dan Hockley On-Call Liaison Officer at Waltham Abbey Fire Station, please email mailbox.OCLO@essex-fire.gov.uk with your name, phone number/email address, preferred date/time for a virtual meeting and meeting type preference – Microsoft Teams, FaceTime or phone call.

Dan will be available between Monday 13 July – Sunday 19 July between 9am and 5pm. He can answer questions about the on-call firefighter role, recruitment process and fitness requirements.

Information about Waltham Abbey Fire Station:

Waltham Abbey Fire Station is a day-crewed fire station which means there are firefighters in the fire station during the day Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm. Outside of those times, on-call firefighters respond when alerted by pager.

We’re converting to an on-call station and are currently recruiting on-call firefighters at Waltham Abbey Station who can cover during the day, evenings, weekends or a mixture of all three. 

If you live or work within 5 minutes of Waltham Abbey Fire Station, you could be an on-call firefighter who is paid to protect their community. 

On-call firefighters at Waltham Abbey Fire Station responded to 248 incidents in 2019/2020.

Of those 248 incidents, 75 calls were to fires, 80 were false alarms and 93 were Special Service incidents which could be helping to cut someone out of a vehicle following a collision, rescuing an animal or helping our police and ambulance colleagues.
